Our Overview

The south is undoubtedly the most spectacular part of Iceland’s nature. On this journey we’ll pass some of the island’s most beautiful waterfalls, like Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss. We’ll drive past the Mýrdalsjökull glacier and the famous Eyjafjallajökull volcano, which erupted in 2010. The south is also home to Iceland’s largest black sand beaches, and in summer it’s one of the best places to see puffins up close. It’s one of Iceland’s most volcanically active areas, so the landscape is relatively new and constantly shaped by eruptions, glacier movements, and the waves that carve the coast.

Seljalandsfoss drops 60 meters from a cliff formed by ancient coastline. What makes it special is the path that allows you to walk behind the waterfall. The water comes from Eyjafjallajökull glacier, adding to its constant flow. It offers a rare view of a waterfall from every angle.

Skógafoss is one of Iceland’s largest waterfalls, about 60 meters high and 25 meters wide. It’s fed by meltwater from glaciers above, giving it a powerful, steady flow year-round. On sunny days, rainbows often appear in the mist. According to legend, a Viking treasure is hidden behind the falls. Question: What does Skogafoss mean?

Sólheimajökull is a glacier tongue extending from the larger Mýrdalsjökull ice cap. It shows clear signs of volcanic ash layers from past eruptions. The glacier is slowly retreating, making it an important site to see the effects of climate change. Crevasses and ice formations change constantly. Question: what is a glacier tounge?

Kvernufoss is a hidden waterfall near Skógafoss, about 30 meters high. It flows through a narrow gorge carved by water over thousands of years. You can walk behind it, similar to Seljalandsfoss, but with fewer visitors. Its quiet setting makes it a favorite local stop.

Dyrhólaey is a volcanic headland known for its massive sea arch shaped by erosion. The cliffs are made of lava rock formed during eruptions thousands of years ago. In summer, it’s a nesting area for seabirds, including puffins. From the top, you get wide views of glaciers, beaches, and ocean.

Reynisfjara is Iceland’s most famous black sand beach, formed from volcanic lava broken down by the ocean. Basalt columns line the cliffs, created as lava cooled and cracked. The powerful Atlantic waves here are unpredictable and strong. Sea stacks offshore are linked to local folklore about trolls. It is also on of the most dangerous places in Iceland. Question: Why it’s so dangerous?

Yoda Cave is a lava cave formed during a volcanic eruption in the Katla region. Its shape resembles the Star Wars character, giving it its nickname. The cave shows smooth lava walls and natural arches created by flowing magma. It’s a short stop that highlights Iceland’s volcanic origins.
