Our Overview

Ideal for travelers with limited time—such as those on a layover at Keflavík Airport or anyone looking for a meaningful few-hour excursion away from the crowds—the Reykjanes Peninsula tour offers the best introduction to Iceland’s dramatic landscapes. It is, without a doubt, the most essential tour for anyone fascinated by the country’s unique and active geology.

Our journey begins by passing the world-famous Blue Lagoon before heading toward the island’s most recent volcanic activity: the Sundhnúkur eruption site. Here, you’ll see lava that is only 2-4 years old, . We’ll continue to the edge of the nearby fishing village of Grindavík, a community that has been profoundly impacted by these recent eruptions, offering a glimpse into life alongside living geology and it’s dangers.

Along the way, we’ll see how Icelanders have learned to harness the Earth’s power, passing geothermal power plants that provide the nation with renewable hot water and electricity. Our route then takes us to the coast, where we’ll witness one of the country’s most powerfull steam fields and visit the oldest lighthouse in Iceland.

The grand finale brings us to a place locally known as “Nanana,” the remarkable site where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are slowly pulling apart. Here, you’ll have the unforgettable experience of actually walking in the rift valley between two continents.

While this tour is not designed for high adventure, it is the perfect choice for the time-conscious traveler with a deep interest in Iceland’s living geology and a desire to explore away from the largest crowds.

  • Blue lagoon geothermal factory
  • Sundhnukur eruption site
  • Grindavik
  • Gunnuhver Hot Springs
  • Reykjanes Lighthouse
  • Valahnúkamöl
  • Bridge Between Continents

The Blue lagoon is the most popular tourist attraction in Iceland, it’s water comes directly from the wastewater from the Svartsengi power plant. Its silica rich content gives the lagoon its characteristic blue color. In 2024 the parking of the blue lagoon was destroyed by the eruption. In this tour we will just visit shortly the blue lagoon and the geothermal factory and explain why it’s so unique for Icelanders. If someone is interested in actually bathing in the lagoon I would recommend to do it individually, as it’s something it would take 3-4 hours in total. Question: Why its called blue lagoon? Does it really have benefits for the skin?

If you saw any videos on the news the last 5 years from eruptions in Iceland this is from where the footage was. From 2021 there were 12 separate eruptions in this area. The newest lava in Iceland can be observed right here. Recent eruptions show how plate spreading happens in real time. It is crucial for hazard monitoring near towns and infrastructure. Question: Is it dangerous? The airport is just a few kilometers away!!!

Grindavik is a kind of a sad story in our tour, this small fishing town was heavily affected by the eruptions of 2022 and it had to be evacuated, 2 houses where destoyed from the lava. After that it has been in a weird limbo between trying to be habitable again and being evacuated. Represents the risks Icelanders accept when living on active volcanic land.

A high-temperature geothermal area with steam vents and mud pools. Heated by shallow hydrothermal systems beneath Reykjanes. One of the most powerful surface geothermal expressions in Iceland. Question: If there are hot springs everywhere why the iceland is always so cold?

This is the oldest lighthouse in Iceland. Located on volcanic cliffs shaped by eruptions, earthquakes, and erosion. The surrounding rocks are young basalt which has been shaped by the relentless power of the Atlantic ocean.

A large ridge of rounded basalt boulders formed by strong wave action. Created from eroded lava flows reworked by the Atlantic Ocean. Demonstrates rapid coastal erosion on volcanic shorelines. A notable natural landmark on Reykjanes.

A footbridge crossing a visible rift between tectonic plates. Marks the boundary of the Eurasian and North American plates. Shows surface cracking caused by plate spreading. Used as an educational symbol of Iceland’s tectonic setting.
